Assessments and juries

Run juries to evaluate students against a rubric, record an outcome, and move them up a skill level.

An assessment is a formal evaluation, called a jury. A panel of your staff scores each student against a rubric, you record an outcome, and if they’ve earned it you move them up to the next skill level right there. It’s how graded studios run recital juries, belt tests, and end-of-term evaluations.

Scheduling a jury

Select New jury and give it a name (like “Winter Piano Jury”), a date and optional start and end time, and the skill system you’re assessing against: the graded ladder the students will be scored and promoted within. You can add staff notes that stay private to your team. Save it and open the jury to build it out.

Building the panel and the rubric

Inside a jury you set up two things:

  • Panel: the staff who sit as judges and score the students. Add each panelist so they show up on the scoring sheet.
  • Rubric: the axes you score against, like Technique, Musicality, or Stage presence. Add a criterion for each one. Every panelist scores every student on every criterion, so the whole panel is looking at the same things.

Adding the students

Under Students, add everyone the panel will assess. You can add and remove students right up until they’ve been scored.

Scoring a student

Select Score next to a student to open their sheet. You’ll see a grid of your panelists across your rubric criteria. Enter each panelist’s score in each cell. Then:

  • Choose an outcome: Pass, Fail, or Deferred. This is your call as the studio; it isn’t worked out from the scores.
  • Optionally pick a level to promote them to, within the jury’s skill system.
  • Add a note to the student (they’ll see this on their own profile) and an internal note that stays with your team.

Atelier Studio combines the panel’s scores into a single result for you. You can come back and edit a score any time before you apply it.

Moving the student’s level

When a student passes and you’ve chosen a level for them, select Apply on their result. That moves them to the new level, and the change lands on their skill history marked as coming from the assessment, and any note you wrote for the student appears on their record. If you didn’t set a new level (say, on a Fail or a Deferred), there’s nothing to apply and their level stays where it is.
